The continued popularity of social media has flooded the industry. Now, there are so many options to choose from, many companies are tempted to use them all. But use caution, not all platforms are suitable for all industries. Before trying to decide which platform is right for you, make sure you know your know who you are trying to reach. Who are they? Where do they spend their time on the web?
There are three major advantages that social media can provide to companies, and each advantage has platforms that work best. Which advantages are most important to your company? Answer that question and you will have an easier time deciding which platform is best for you.
Advantage 1: Networking: Social media can extend your reach and connectivity into the parts of the web where your potential customers gather. Social media users connect with those who have similar interests as they do, and they pass on information to this network as well. Best platform to use: Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. These three sites give you the tools to establish/strengthen relationships with those involved with your industry.
Advantage 2: Promoting: If promotion is your top priority, you must engage sites where your strengths, opinions, and your business, will be appreciated and endorsed by others. Best platform to use: YouTube™. Besides YouTube, other promotional sites such as Flickr®, Howcast, iTunes® and other podcasting platforms help you upload content geared at informing your network about your product and service.
Advantage 2: Sharing: If you’re using social media because you feel you have something to offer that you want to share, you want to find an audience to build a bond with, share your ideas with, and interact with. Best platform to use: Blogging, Community-Minded Forums, and popular bookmarking sites (e.g. Digg) and review-based sites (e.g. Yelp). These platforms will allow you to share your expertise, and tag or recommend content for others to use.
